About Earthen Alchemy

Marla Jean Martin is a ceramic artist and former biochemist whose practice bridges material science and spiritual inquiry.

Working under the name Earthen Alchemy, she creates sculptural and functional works that explore transformation, memory, and the unseen forces of nature. Her process draws on the ancient principles of alchemy — transmutation, union, and renewal — reimagined through contemporary clay and glaze chemistry.

Inspired by experiences such as kayaking with whales, hiking active volcanoes, and living beneath the ancient oaks on her property, Marla seeks to reveal what often goes unnoticed. Each piece she creates is both vessel and meditation — a meeting place between matter and spirit, where science and soul converge.
